Check engine light/air pump 850

The check engine light on my '96 850 is illuminated and the dealership has told me the air pump has failed (I didn't even know there was one.) Another service shop gave me the same diagnosis. Repair estimates run from $400 to $750. How critical is the air pump, and do I risk damage to the engine if I don't replace it quickly?
