Jay,

The "service" light will come on for 3 minutes at start-up to remind you to service the car, i.e. change the oil, at 5000 mile intervals (turbo models) Shut it off and be done with it, well, at least for another 500 miles.

The "CHECK ENGINE" light will illuminate when a fault code is set-off. These fault codes can also be read via the on-board diagnostic (OBD) center.

I highly suggest to get yourself a Haynes manual. Lots of great info about your Volvo (and those pesky lights!)
