If you don't fix it/get it fixed soon, it will damage your axle beyond repair, as all the grease will exit the joint, and moisture & sand will find it's way in there. In some cases, mainly if your having the job done at a shop, it's cheaper to just replace the axle, as doing the boots is a bit more labor intensive.
I replaced the boots on one side of my '93GLT (CV Boot Kit 271648-8; $44.40 as of Jan '01, better prices are out there) Not a tough job for the DIY'er.
