Painting it may work, but the chip should probably be filled first.
What may work better is to try to get a matching wood filler crayon and fill it w/that. These crayons are the the type used to cover small nail holes and blemishes in woodworking.
These can be worked quite well if you slice off a piece a little larger than you need to fill the chip. Work it between your fingers for a bit to warm it up and soften it. Then use a small screwdriver blade or similar tool to work it into the chip. Wipe off excess w/cloth.
