Intermittent Starting Problem- Bad Starter?? 850

I've a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo with 73K miles.

A few days ago the car would not start (starter motor did not turn) - a fellow at work gave me a battery jump and it started right up. Figured my 3.5 year old battery had "had it" I replaced it.

Next morning same problem re-appeared that is turn the key and all the idiot lights come on but no juice to the starter (no sound).

I tested bo battery and alternnator and they are in good shape.

I discovered that if I hold the key all the way in the start position for a few seconds the starter motor will suddenly engage (a delay, strange).

Also, noticed a strange sound(metallic) that appears right as I release the starter.

I suspect my starter is on its way out - any other suggestions??
