... battery in th car ... not a great idea

Why does your battery need a charge? If your car cannot keep it up, I think that you are headed for woes.

As was mentioned, I think that you should disconnect one terminal before connecting a charger. It is possible to damage some of your car's expensive components with a rogue charger.

I like to fold up a paper towel lengthwise and lay it across the open battery caps to catch any acid that sprays out when bubbles burst as they surface during charging.

In my experience, if your battery is down on fluid and not fully charged, you might as well start saving for a new battery.
