The Haldex is a Swedish design also used on the Audi Quattro, VW 4Motion, Volvo S60 AWD and the 2003 XC70. You can read more about it at haldex-traction.com. It seems like everyone considers it an upgrade over the viscous coupling used in previous Volvo AWD models--stronger and quicker reacting. It splits power between front and rear wheels through a wet multi-plate clutch controlled by various electronic sensors. The normal distribution is 95-5 front-rear but can go to 35-65 within 1/7 wheel rotation.
I just wish the driveline had some sort of low-range or even hill-descent mode. Sounds like the new VW SUV will have a low-range which will make it preferable for off-highway use and steep boat ramps.
