Intermittent Stalling -- No Check Engine Light, No Secondary Codes 850

My '96 850 has taken to the annoying habit of stalling every so often. I am usually able to get the car restarted, but the engine is not exactly springing to life on these occassions. Several weeks ago it stalled in one of CA's rare rainstorm's and would not restart; we had to have the car towed to the local dealer, where they recharged the battery and the car restarted immediately. There is no check engine light on. I have had the fault codes checked, with no codes embedded in the system at all. The mechanic at the local indie in Monterey (Dan Burton's Volvo) suggested that that a failing fuel pump would not leave a code, but absent a problem while at the shop they could not be sure this was the problem. The car otherwise runs like a champ; no decrease in fuel economy or other symptoms. My wife claims that the car tends to stall while on an incline and in damp weather. Have any other 850 and/or V-70 owners experienced this? Help!
