My 88 745T kicked butt 850

The 745T is a mechanically controlled turbo, so a couple turns of the wastegate rod or the addition of a manual boost controller will add some badly needed low end pop. (Heaven knows, the top end of this thing is out of sight.) I bought it used with a boost controller already installed, pushing 14psi. Ask IPD about the performance camshaft - it went into my 88 because it was a non-interference engine, giving me at least 25 more hp according to IPD and my indy tech. These two mods (plus a swaybar and a home-made strut tower) made my 745T the most fun car I ever drove, with a 0-60 time of about 6.7 or so when manually upshifting with the awesome, kick-in-the-pants transmission that came with this thing. I sold it for real money at 275K miles - and have regretted it ever since.

I'll buy another one, add a other few mods (including new replacement e-codes for the sealed beam lights) and have a totally fun project car. And coming from Volvo's style-agnostic period, this car can always be made to look good. (The current S60's, by way of contrast, already look dated and frumpy...and how long are we going to have to suffer with this major design gaffe, given Volvo's glacial pace?)

The major drawback of the 88, because it's a manually controlled turbo, is the turbo runs hot and will (I repeat WILL) have to be rebuilt every 125K if you drive it hard.
