Sparodic brake light failure 850 1997

I heard that on volvos that you need to replace both bulbs on both sides.
If you have two different manufactured bulbs then the resistance of the bulbs can be different giving a false failure.
Also check and make sure the third brake light is on.
If you have a spoiler with the light in it (aftermarket) and you disable the built in on (rear window) it can give a false failure.
