Security Systems/Insurance Questions S70 1998

We've had the good fortune to buy a wonderful '98 s70. As such we've had to go through the usual dance with the insurance company. This is the first car I've had with a security system. It's not well defined in the user manual. So the principal question: Is the security system on this generation Volvo of the disabling type? How easy is it to break the steering column?

I can understand reluctance to post these answers to the forum, so please send responses to joshturse@tamu.edu if you feel you must instead of posting here.
