Lights 850 1996

How good are you with tools? Remember to set the parking brake while doing this to prevent the car from rolling. To adjust the gear selector sensor you'll need to pop the hood and pull out the the Battery (temporarily so you can get to all the other crap that has to be removed, make sure you have your radio activation code available for later), Battery-Tray and Airbox and some of the Air Intake Tubing to get to the sensor. A flashlight comes in handy here. If you follow the tranny dipstick down and where the dipstick tubing bracket attaches to the top of the tranny you will see the shift-position sensor plate, its about a 4" quarter moon aluminum plate and the shift cable attaches to a shaft right in the middle of it. If you have all the misc. air intake tubes out of the way you can set the battery back in to where you can reconnect the cables (again temporarily) just so the reverse lights will work. With the parking brake set, place the transmission in shift selector in the Reverse position. On the end nearest the engine where the tranny-dipstick tube is attached, you need to remove the nut holding the tube bracket to the sensor plate so you can loosen the stud-bolt underneath it, and loosen the bolt on the other end so that the sensor plate can been rotated just a little. If you have the shift selector in Reverse you can remove the shift cable arm off the shaft there in the middle of the sensor plate and push it to the side so its out of the way. Once you have loosened the bolts at either end of the sensor plate just a little so the plate can be moved, put the ignition key in the RUN position so that the REVERSE LIGHTS can come on when you move the sensor plate. You will only have to move the plate a quarter inch one way or the other, just enough so the reverse lights come on in the desired shifter position. When you are satisfied with the adjustment tighten the end bolts up again and replace the shift cable arm on the shaft. Then sit in the car and move the shifter back and forth and make sure the adjustment is satifactory and that the car will crank with the shifter in PARK (Don't start it, just check that it will crank). Replace all the crap you pulled out and you're done. Hope this has been confusing enough. Good luck ......... Mike
