Never heard of that before and being a Volvo master tech, I think I would have IF it was possible. Who told you that, I'd guess not a dealer? They're saying "bad trans AND bad trans ECU"? Highly unlikely.
What code(s) are stored?

I'd get another opinion from the info so far. Even IF you have codes indicating bad shift solenoids, they can be replaced w/o replacing the entire trans.
