Navigation Voice commands

I have a 2002 XC that is US spec in Europe, I can not get the naviagation system to provide voice commands to driving instructions. Unit has only done this one time. Also have noticed that the defaults (ie miles vs kms, map resolutions, etc) set in the nav system can change without my input. German dealer has attempted to fix but most software instructions are in English. Need to know any hidden menus that might guide me to correct. Thanks
