Removing shift knob 850 1996

850/1994 I got new boot but local body shop cant figure out how to take off ball.Local Volvo dealer wanted to hack saw it off and replace ball for $85 + labor (boot cost me 60 bucks from brentwood volvo). It still remains unfixed.
