I would suggest reading the diagnostic code for transmission fault.

The best thing to do is to purchase a subscribtion from Alldata.com for your model. One year subscription is about $26. You can print out all the information you need for your car.

It is hard to describe step by step on how to use on board diagnotics. I do not do it often and may miss a step.
