I'd avoid all S/V70s like the plague. I'd buy any 850 if the price was right and the car was in decent or repairable condition but the '97 is probably the best year 850 overall. If I was one to work on my own cars (which I do) and didn't want to buy a scan tool or depend on others for its use, I'd opt for a '95 or earlier as those can be diagnosed w/o the use of a scan tool.
Now, any 850...do make sure the AC works (common issues) and that the ATF looks reasonably clean (reddish, not brown). I'd say that AC Evaps and trans replacements (higher mileage....140K+) are the biggest known problems and the rest are minor in comparison.
