Touch-up Paint Varnish Mess

The touch-up paint for my cars has two bottles...one for the color paint and the other for varnish. The varnish always seems to create a bigger mess than it's worth for me and also seems to dry out prematurely. Have any of you had good success with the varnish top coat. If so, what's your secret? I've resorted to just putting on the color coat and calling the quits.
