Volvo's "special designed chains" are not chains at all, but are "traction devices" made by a Swiss company called Spikes Spyder. A metal hub attaches to the wheels by the lug nuts and a set of removable arms attach to this hub and wrap around the top of the tire. A little hard to explain so take a look at their website: http://www.spikes-spider.com/. They are expensive (around $350) compared to chains but are a little cheaper if you buy them from the OEM supplier or one of their distributers than from Volvo.
The problem with the 205/55/R16's and the 205/50/R16's is that there isn't enough clearance on the inside between the tire and struts to fit chains. I think you can put chains or cables on 185/70/R15's if they fit over your rotors on the turbo. Alternately, you can get a set of winter tires and rims for around the same price.
