I believe pre 96 doesnt need the scanner. Doesnt matter the model of the vehicle. The scanners can be costly but provide more information on the codes.
But the codes are readily available on the net.
The turbos are pretty reliable as long as you do regular oil changes and should use synthetic. Also there is nothing like driving a high pressured turbo... lots of torque!!!! Nothing like seeing and hearing a brick fly!
