How do I fix a bumpy, noisy ride? 850 1993

My '93 850 makes rattling/knocking noises near the front wheels when I go over bumps. The ride seems a bit stiff also. I've replaced the tires. I'm about ready to replace the brakes and rotors soon too. I'm not sure that replacing the shocks would do anything, they aren't mushy or bouncy. Do I look into replacing the shocks? What about the struts? Is this just something I have to deal with and is normal for this particular model?
