bad smell when AC is OFF 850 1996

Great site and board!
I have a '96 850 Turbo Wagon. I've read all the various 'bad smell' posts and am going to try the lysol fix but my problem seems slightly unique in that
> the smell goes away when the AC is ON
> the smell goes away when 'recirc' is ON

so I think that it's the fresh air intake (is that the two things up by the radiator or the screened vents back by the windshield?). Thanks in advance.
