Sean,
I don't know about the hum front the front wheel - maybe low power steering fluid, but theres a good chance your PNP switch is acting up for your transmission problems.

Do a "cleaning procedure" for the PNP gearshift switch by rapidly shifting the lever from Park to 1 a dozen times - when the car is not running but the ignition is on. Its described in the first paragraph here:

If that helps you can expect to need to replace the PNP before winter.
