I've been driving Swedemobiles since 1983, only a total of 3, through. Since I am now convinced that I'll burn in Hell, forever, if I recommend anything but a Toyota-Lexus or Honda-Acura to anyone else I have to agree, sort of.
I do think the OP will receive a better price for his car as a trade-in if it runs than if if he sells it for parts. If the Volvo service department can't find the problem, doesn't Volvo have a service hot line for dealers or roving Master-of-the-Universe-of-Volvos super techs? Ordinarily I suggest taking the car to an indy Volvo shop but it seems the dealers are so often baffled with the S80, far more often than with the "old" 850-70s where it's usually just dealer incompetence. IMO Volvo should buy up these things, fix 'em and use 'em for service loaners, then junk 'em. (BMW is doing this with their "problem" 745i lemon Law buybacks.)
Or maybe not, if they've thought this through completely.
OK, donate them to the Army for target practice....
