sounds like you just didn't have a good connection... frankly, I prefer to save the wear and tear on my vehicle jumping another, so I just use a portable jump-starting battery (I have a portable 12V shop light that plugs right into to it as well - at the same time!... nice to be able to see what you're doing at night)
