It could be the fuel charcoal filter 850 1997

I can't say for sure that this will apply to Volvo. My dad's Toyota has really bad odor problem. We took it to different shops, they perform all the tricks on cleaning the A/C system but none helps for long (lasted about 1-2weeks and then the smell comes back). One of my dad's friends who is a mechanic told him to replace the fuel charcoal filter, and that rids the odor ever since.
