2001 and newer ("the new looking") Volvos have immobilizer systems, and the chip is embedded into the key. I do not beleive model yr 2000 had immobilizer system, but you might want to double check on that. New keys with immobilizer chips in them are very expensive, I know that much. I needed to have an extra key made for my 98 V70, and it was something like $20 at the dealer.
