Don't jump to conclusions about the tranny yet.

I'd suggest you bite the bullet and take the car to a good Volvo indy mechanic and let them have a look and see.

Good Luck !

BTW- The Volvo remanufactured trannys seems to be around $2,500 - $3,000 installed from what I've seen posted on these boards.
