Thanks - you're right - I used the wrong term when I put in the original message but you hit it right on the head. It is the bracket on the door and it makes the "pop pop" sound just as you described. The body shop that looked at it was not surprised and it took him about 30 seconds to tell me what it was as soon as he opened the door.
