AC EVAP failure cause - truth or myth 850 1994

I live in Colorado, which is pretty dry, so I'm hoping our arid climate will
protect my '94 850 wagon, although my mechanic tells me they have replaced
some evaps. I don't use the A/C that much & also turn it off a couple of minutes before reaching my destination. Do you think that will help or am I
doomed? I've already replaced the sensor by the driver & a damper motor.
