Fan died 1988

I have a 240 DL 1988. Heater Fan was running when I turned off car, in 20 minutes when I turned it on again the fan did not run. The air conditioner appears to be working, but I am afraid to run it with the fan off. I checked the fuses, fine. It is hot in Mississippi in August, what is the problem? The thermostat was bit running hot nor was there any sound to indicate a problem.
