Look at Continental Extreme Contacts. They appear to have good performance in most conditions for a very reasonable price. Read the reviews at Tirerack.com.
For a true all season tire, check out the BFG Control TA M65. Consumer Reports rated them excellent for winter as well as summer. I have a new set on a 240 wagon but have yet to drive a winter with them. I may try them on my XC this fall as they're available in a 205/65/15 and very affordable.
12 years ago I ran a set of Hakkas through the summer on a VW. They wore fine but were a bit noisy. The sidewalls seemed a weak spot and were easily damaged in my experience.
Consider rotating your tires F-B at every other oil change. That's 4,000 x 2 for me or every 8,000 miles. Good time to inspect your brake pads too.
