I have a similar problem, however I do not smell any gas. There is probably a leak from one of your injectors. This is easy to check, just remove the front cover which will expose the injectors. Look for signs of fuel. If this is the case, it is not a big deal to replace, for you or your shop. The leak is causing the fuel pressure to bleed away. If my car sits for more than a day, I turn on the ignition and wait for 3 to 4 seconds before starting to build up pressure and allow a smooth start. I believe I may have a check valve leaking by at my fuel pump.
