Drive train problems 850 AWD wagon 850 1997

Thanks Neil,

Thanks for your reply. It's good to know somebody else has the same model. I understand only 400 were sold in Canada. The local dealership only knows of two other 850 AWD's. I've never seen another in four years I've owned this car. Its a green 5-speed with tan interior.

The shudder I mentioned seems to be in the drive train vs suspension, and doesn't happen specifically at steering lock, but definitely when reversing. The sensation is of someting binding, then releasing. The service manager at my dealership suggested it was the parking brake sticking then releasing, but I know it happens with the wheels rolling freely.

I've wondered about the carrier bearing myself, but again the technicians say it's ok. I'm not convinced, as they've missed other faults in the past that a reasonably conscientious mechanic would have picked up. However, when I bring things to their attention, they respond. All in all, I'm not impressed with the quality of technical training Volvo provides.

Re. evaporator and seat heaters. Also been there, done that. I'm told that the seats will be less toasty, and I may override the relay they put in. Winters are cold here. Control arms will be done Tuesday. I'll press them to test drive it and see if they can pick up the noise.

It would be great to compare notes with other 850 AWD owners. Previously I've had an 87 740 turbo, an 84' GLT coupe, and a 74 240. This has been my favorite, but I'm worried about whether I'll be able to afford to keep it on the road as it ages.

Ted
