Dear hamfisted thanks so much for your advice. when I looked into it I see that that the devices you suggest are good performance/price ratio, but I see that niether of them can read ABS/SIR codes which I was hoping to do...looks like I'm pipe dreaming about finding a cheap device that can do all this.

I kind'a like the palm one out there by ease diagnostics http://www.obd2.com/ but it too cannot read the ABS codes.
