Is it really worth the time and effort

The mark up may vary, but the biggest advantage is in knowing that you got good quality parts, and not just whatever the mechanic could get the cheapest or the most easily (including calling the nearest Volvo dealer and charging you the same outrageous dealer price for someting you can get from an OEM discounter/wholesaler).
