Ray's suggestion above sounds like the better way to go, it's inexpensive and the install is do-it-yourself. The only downsides are 1) will you find a trusty seller? and 2) how long can you expect the unit to last?
To go with a new aftermarket in-dash cd receiver, $1000 seems rather high, even in Canadian dollars. I would think you could find an electronics "superstore" offering a better package, installed and out the door. But still, expect closer to $600 maybe.
Another option would be to use a portable cd player, running that into your existing reciever via an adapter cable.
