From outside the car, try pushing in on the tailgate in while squeezing (opening) the latch. On my tailgate, I discovered a broken spring in the latch so the mechanism wouldn't snap open when activated. Pushing on the tailgate takes pressure off the latch mechanism and allows gravity to unhook it. Kind of annoying, but once my wife and I got used to it, no problem. Don't feel like paying $189.95 for a new latch mechanism...yet.
