The difference is often in the engine. Early SEs in Australia had the 10 valve (107kW) engine. It was maybe some time in 1996 Volvo decided to give all non-turbo 850s the 20 valve (125kW). GLTs in Aust had sunroof, trip computer, cruise, climate control but were never turbo.
