I'm also thinking of getting an obd scanner. While true that many things do require software, lots of things don't. Currently, I just take it to autozone and have them run the diagnostic for me. Then I can decide if i think it needs to be fixed right away or not. A code for a bad ignition coil went off about 4 months ago and I chose to ignore it until this last week when it started missing at startup. So then I bought the coil and replaced it myself. Total cost: $55. (Well, I actually changed the plugs too while I was in there.) So it only takes a few minor repairs to pay for itself. A couple of O2 replacements would probably make it worth it.
I just haven't bought one b/c I'm cheap and I just go up to autozone and make them do it instead.
