Replacing the gas door lock mechanism is a simple job in a sedan - You ought to try get at one in a wagon!
Before you replace the mechanism, take a bright light and look at the lock area inside the door itself.
Two of our 850s had a problem with the grommet that surrounds the lock pin itself. In both cases the edge of the grommet was folded over, pushing the lock pin aside a bit, eventually causing it to jam.
The first time, in our wagon, I pulled the whole rear of that side apart and removed the mechanism before I saw the problem. It has worked for two years now.
In the second case, I was able to straighten the grommet out with a dental probe, saving a LOT of work.
