I recently had my tranny flushed and my mechanic doesn't use a machine. He says they are a waste of money, since the tranny fluid pump does the same thing.
This is what I witnessed...
1. He disconnected the ATF return line from the ATF radiator. He then attached a transparent hose to the line and stuck the opposite end in a one-gallon bucket.
2. He removed the ATF dipstick and replaced it with a fluid funnel.
3. He started the car.
4. The old fluid began to run through the hose (you could see how dirty/dark it was) into the bucket. He would then start to pour in (one gallon at a time) the new fluid into the funnel. As soon as all the new fluid was sucked in, he would turn off the car and dump the old.
5. He continued to add new fluid until the ATF was nice and clear and pink.
6. After completion, he connected the return line back to the radiator and used a tie-wrap for added security.
That's it.
