Replacing Heater Core - Buy part, then open up? What else do I need?

Get the antifreeze smell every time I turn the temp dial up. Based on review of posts, I assume it is the heater core. I didn't notice anyone posting that they just fixed a connection. So I was thinking of ordering the part before I open it up. Alternatively: what are the chances it is just the connection needing a new o-ring?

Second question: Beside the heater core, what parts do I need? I understand there is a part #3545662 with 4 o-rings, clips, and spacers for $8 at volvoparts.com Do I need that? Anything else?

BTW: quotes so far for core: $323.40 dealer retail, $225 to $243 at FCPGroton or volvoparts.com. However Manolo posted in Nov 2002 that he got a core from autohausAZ.com for $77. I am waiting their quote to confirm. Also: Manolo's 11/28/2002 post gives detailed instructions I plan to follow. Any other tips welcome.
