850 GLT TRANSMISSION PROBLEM?? 850 1997

On my wifes 850 when you start the car and go to take it out of park you have to press the 'override' button before you can put it in gear. What control this function. The car runs good and don't have any other problems other than that. Is it anything that a shade tree mechanic can fix or does it have to go to the Volvo dealer.....oh sometimes it does not have to be pressed and I don't know why. Any information will help.
