Yes, this is a known trick and it works.

The reason it works has to be because you are improving the antenna efficiency (impedance match) of the remote. By necessity, the antenna within the remote itself is compromised by its small size. When you place the remote against your chin/head, your body becomes part of a more efficient larger antenna.
