The 98 AWD turbo engine is a low pressure turbo and is a bit
different then the high pressure turbo engine in the 95 now.
I think you could do it but it is not a straight swap. Some internal
engine parts are different (the 95 has smaller piston diameter
since it has a smaller displacement). The electronics for engine
management would have to be swapped and the intake plumbing might
be a bit different. Mid-year 98s have a different timing belt
tensioner and the turbo's are different, too. Probably lots
of other small differences like this that can be overcome with some
work or fabrication. I'm not sure if the AWD electronics would
expect a rear drive component (I doubt it).
If it were me, I'd shoot for a straight year-for-year swap unless
you want a longer term project car.
What exactly are you fixing?
