check engine light 850 1996

The "check engine light" just came on while driving last night. (The gas cap is on correctly & I did not fill up w/ the motor running.) Is there any way to troubleshoot this w/o the stupid tool? My Haynes manual says that the tool is needed for this model/year. Thanks.
