"And how insulting - why only WOMEN who wouldn't want to open the hood? An equal number of men are ignorant about what goes on under there and don't have the time or interest in maintaining their own car. Who wrote that originally?"

Having been an auto tech for almost 25 yrs now, I can say that despite the notion that most guys are mechanically inclined, MOST who own cars are clueless as to how to really fix anything under the hood. If all men knew everything about cars, I wouldn't have a job. The lack of a hood idea is rediculous as most people (both men and women) NEVER open the hoods and even do basic things like check fluid levels. Volvo and others put level sensors to signal customers when fluids get low BUT does anyone open the hood and just add a fluid, NO, they'll drive miles to a dealership to say "my low fluid light is on". If one doesn't want to open a hood, one doesn't have to. What also never ceases to amaze me is plastic covers that hide the engine even more UNDER the hood so that when you open the hood, you STILL can't see the engine. WHY? There's suppose to be an engine under there and a hood covers it for those who don't want to see it. The latest Volvo XC90s (and probably more to come) added yet another huge plastic cover to hide the engine.
