I replaced my friend's fuel pump in her '97 850 GLT. Sounds similar. The car had problems starting and then one day it didn't start at all. Had to have it towed. I eventually diagnosed it to be the fuel pump. The job isn't too difficult for an average DIYer. Just a couple of notes. Use the instructions in the Haynes manual as a guide. There is a plastic ring that retains the fuel pump assembly. I used an oil filter wrench that has 2 "C" shaped jaws to loosen the plastic ring. When disconnecting the positive terminal from the pump, make sure you press the detent to release it from the spade connector. FCPGroton.com sells it for $175 + s&h.
