There is a possibility, not a probability, that changing the fluid could result in the tranny going south. On the other hand, there is a certainty that not changing the fluid will result in your tranny going away.

I'd go ahead and change it, using a decent non-synthetic fluid. Run it for a while, to make sure everything is going fine. Then flush it again, but this time use a good synthetic ATF.
